Highlights from our team's thoughts about being a Cultural Ambassador

see more on the Personal Profiles

What are some things you have learned about being a Cultural Ambassador that really stood out to you?: One thing that I learned about being a cultural ambassador is that you should not prejudge people and there cutlers. Also another thing that I learned is to see things from other people’s eyes or point of view. And to be prepared to do stuff your not use to doing. Try not to be disappointed in things they do that you don’t want to do. Also not to disrespect any one especially the elders. How do you feel about your role as a Cultural Ambassador?: As a culture ambassador I feel excited about being able to go to learn about someone else culture. Also being able to let people know about our culture.
Do you feel ready to represent your own culture?:
Yes I feel ready to represent our culture but also a little nerves because I dont want to mess up.

Area for Exploration One: One Thing We Must See Or Experience When We Go To Ouzinkie:
History of Kodiak and Ouzinkie.
What we learned. The three key things that we learned were they have a different Chistmas than us, and that they have two Easters. The third thing that we learned was that when they have a big feast or celibration they actually go out and harvest the food for the dishes they prepare.
Learning Autiiq culture from Dr. Haakenson

Area for Exploration Two
Russian Orthodox Religion and Culture of Ouzkinkie.
What we learned. Three keys things I learned was in the service there was a point in the service when Father Evon went behind a curtain, when we asked him he told us it was to represent the three days that Christ spent in the tomb. Another thing, at the church he went around spreading incense around which is to carry our prayers to Jesus on a heavenly fragance. Our last example is the Russian Orothodox cross. Unlike a regular cross it has a smaller bar across the top and a slanting bar on the bottom. The bar across the top represents the sign the Romans hung above him that said, 'King of the Jews'. The slanting bar represents the two criminals that were hung with him. The corner pointing up shows the way to heaven while the bottom corner shows the way to eternal punishment. These are three key things we learned.

Area for Exploration Three
Exploring Alutiiq Culture
What we learned. Three key things that we learned in Ouzinkie were....we learned how to make a traditional meal. The second thing that we learned was patience is a key thing in making any meal. The last thing that we learned while making this dish was it is a traditional dish because of the fish in it sorta represents their culture.

Destination Eleven: Our First Week Together
Closing circle thoughts from our team on the first exchange

What are some of the important things that you have learned about your Sister Schools culture from this visit?: We learned that our sister school is very small and most of them are related to each other. They have two Christmas's since they are Russian Orthadox. Another thing that we learned is that they have family in other areas in Alaska. But most of there relatives live in Ouziknie.

How do you think that this visit has changed how you think about yourself and your own culture?: We think this visit has changed how we think of ourselves and our culture in a big way. We used to think that we were all close but upon relating too the Ouzinkie Ambassador's we realized we really don't know that much about our friends or each other.
