Area for Exploration Ideas

Boarding Schools in Alaska The team will explore the story of public education in Alaska, the Molly Hootch Act, and speak to someone who experienced being required to leave their village and go to a boarding school. Comparisons and contracts made to present day boarding schools.
Making Caribou Stew The team will learn the importance of caribou to different cultures and regions in Alaska, and, together with someone from the host community, make caribou stew.
Using Public Transportation The team is challenged to navigate an urban area using public transportation. They will choose a place to go and then find the best route there. They will interview patrons of public transportation to get a better understanding of why it is important.
Helping Out at a Social Service Agency (like the Salvation Army) The team will take a tour of a social service agency to learn how it operates, and spend some time volunteering at the agency. Interviews will help them understand why social service agencies are needed in urban areas.
