I'm an exchange student from Italy. I'm here since august and i'll stay here until june. I like soccer, eating, hanging around, wrestling, stay out with friends and have fun.
I'm an only child. My mum's name is Camilla. My dad's one is Andrea. We live in Parma. Here in Alaska, my host family memebers are Mark (my dad), Cami (my mum), Katy and Anna (my sisters), Willie (my brother) and Curry (my dog). Inthe picture there are me and my dad in front of Castel Sant'Angelo in Vatican City (Rome).
Day 6th in shish....we have to leave tomorrow...it really sucks, I'm sad I've to say goodbye to all these wonderful people up here...I already knew the exchange student that came to Anchorage in February, but i couldn't imagine how friendly are people here...everybody asks you how are you doing, and they really care about you enjoying your time here...it's nice, i really felt part of this community...about the day...today was carnival, we watched and danced native dances in the gym...it was cool and interesting to get in touch with these dances that are obviously really, really old....the dances tell about the history of the village, they involve ice and igloo construction...at lunch we had burrito and rice and milk WITH CHOCOLATE (some carnival's luxury i guess...)....i found a way to get an ulu knife for my dad, and that makes me happy....i also (well, mary did it for me) finished my kuspaq...it really turns out well...i like it...in the afternoon we hade an interesting presentation about shishmaref's history...the first airplane landed in 1958, while the new airport has been built in 1987...till 70s there was just one phone in all the island, they had to find who has been called through the village (crazy during the winter months...)....we worked then on our RURE video (Sophie is a genius with iMovie...god bless her)...it's about food and sustainsability, but there is a lot, A LOT, A LOT of ice chopping....and then we went to the carnival!!! It was cool, i bought ticket for 5 $, i lost everything in the games (I'm honestly horrible in shooting...) and with my last 50 cents i tried the roulette...and I WON! 20 bucks baby! I took a basketball bag and a school t-shirt....I stopped with my family at the post office and now i'm blogging about this last entire day in the village....sad...
I wanna go watch the basketball game in the evening, and take a last ice-cream at snack shack, and beating, again, Henry at the church....
peace...
Today I woke up at 8, but my bed is so comfortable here...is warm, and outside is so silent...i came back at 1 yesterday night from a birthday party...so i kept sleeping till 8:45...when i woke up school was already started...too bad...i took an oat meal at home and almost running i went to carving class...I FINISHED MY FISH STICK! It really looks nice....no idea when i'm gonna use it in italy, but i'm gonna obviously keep it...after the stick, we passed on the kuspaq...I'm almost done, but it's a hard job...i'm never gonna complain again if one of my sweats is a little bit messed up, i swear...for lunch we had fried chicken and we saw a slide show about the hot spring...it looks really cool, that's too bad that we didn't get to go...and then someone had a great idea: LET'S GO SLEEDING (OR SLIDING)...we put on the warm clothes, and we pointed south east with the snow machines....the weather was chilly and windy...i haven't seen the travel, i was completly covered by my cap...thanks god chris was in front of me and megan, stopping the wind for us...god bless that kid...when we got there we got stock in the water...it was kind of scasring, but i liked the adventure....we played with the puppy, tryiong to warm up running around...sadie is really one of the cutest dog i've ever seen in my life...we helped a guy that got blocked in the water and we went back to the town...for warming up we had to go in the gym and to take off our boots and socks....i watched the game and at 5:30 i went with my family to snack shack for dinner...it's sooooooooooooooooo good!!! maybe it's just the idea of eating in the only restaurant of the island, but seriously, the ice cream is the best i had in Alaska till now (i know, i said that almost everyday, but it's true....)....i'm now blogging after having sung Eye of the Tiger at rock band (Henry sucked at the drums....ahahahahah)....peace
I had breakfast with my family, we had eggs and bacon and oat meal...really good! before lunch we worked on our ice-fishing sticks, my one it's almost done...we also saw some native sports' training, and i cut apart a seal with an ulu knife....a one-life opportunity, that's for sure...after lunch we worked on our kuspaq...it takes time, but now i'm done with the cutting part...at 4 we watched the basketball game and then i had dinner with my family (lasagna)...we are now gonna keep working on our kuspaqs, and i might go playing pool with some guys of the village in the evening...peace
Third day in Shish. I woke up and had breakfast at school....hotdog with syrup, unbelievable but good...and we don't have to pay for it...NICE....we took kuspaq lessons, and i understood why they cost so much...it's so hard! Then we talked to percy, the Store's boss...and it was an interesting convesation...After lunch (Italian maccaroni with parmesan cheese...:-) we joined the carving class...it was really funny...i carved a gift for my aunt in Italy...then we watched the first game of the basketball tournament (135-88, crazy...) and we stopped at the restaurant Snack and Shack for an ice-cream....i had a good dinner with my host mom (mark was at the game) and now i'm blogging about the day...i'm about to go watching the evening basketball game, where helen is gonna play....peace
Today i slept till 9, and was simply great...the bed was so warm and i really enjoyed my sleeping...for breakfast we went to Clifford's house...he is a funny dude, that offered us a great breakfast...at school we had Angie for the first period...we played basketball in the gym (i sucked...)Then i had math and writing class...i found a typical touristic souvenir (the BEAROMETER) that my dad bought when we came here 5 years ago...pretty sick...after lunch at school (WE HAD PINEAPPLE!!!!! and the y actually tasted as pineapple!)...in the afternoon we went ice fishing....it took us forever to break through the ice, and i was the one that actually reached the water...but i wasn't like with the fishes...henry and megan had some good catch, and it was a fun activities...i was freezing my feet, but we played manamanama....boys vs girls (of course we won...). For dinner i had a great discussion with my host family about almost everything...they are both cool people...now we are gonna start our kuspac...GOOD DAY!
First day in shish! I woke up at 4, and that was painful...what was really scaring is that there were actually other fools on our plane....well, i tried to sleep, but tia almost broken my arm during the landing and dcolling...she was "kind" of nervous....but just a little bit...my bag was the lightest, 26 pounds, pretty proud of my self...we arrived in kotzebue, the wind was soooo cold, but we still got off the plane...first time of my life i was northern than the artic slope....we then got back on the plane, and in half an hour we were in nome...we were all starving, and there was nothing open...tia, probably feeling guilty for almost destroying my arm, offered us some of her snacks....GOOD JOB! We boarded on a ten place plane (i wasn't sitting next to tia this time,,,)....i slept during the travel to shish....angie, janelle, rene, helen, henry and henry met us at the airport....it was cold out there,,,,but it was a sunny day, so that was great...i met my host family (the lutheran pastor and his wife, two nice people) and i also met Janelle's mom and granpa...they offered me fried chicken, really good after 8 hours without eating....i felt asleep at home while watching the masters of golf (not the most exciting sport in the world, i gotta be honest....)at three we met at angie's house and we started a photo scavanger hunt...of course me and janelle destroyed the other teams (undefeated champions)...in the evening we had a putluck at school, and right now i'm finishing this blog....i hope to be able to see the northern light during this week...peace
