last day...this week has flied away...messed up, really messed up...it's unbelievable how you can get attached to people after just one week...
after breakfast we met at the school...i lost my RURE bag, but i was scared of miss Morell, i wanted to keep it secret till Anchorage....(un)fourtanley she found it (she wasn't mad at all...)...the plane was late, so we passed an hour in the school, exploring new hidden rooms...janelle got hella scary cause of Henry...he hide himself behind doors just to scary her...pretty funny!
then it was time to leave...saying goodbye is never cool, but this time was painful....while we were leaving Henry and Jordan follow the plane with their snowmachine...
in Nome we had a pizza at the airport pizzeria...we spent 72 dollars with hte taxi (for one and an half mile of travel , unbelievable....) and the waitress messed up our ordination...tia got a coke instead of a dr pepper, and chris got a cheese pizza (he is allergic to cheese...)...i had a pizza, but i think the pineapple were passed out (me, sophie and maegan passed the weeking throwing...not cool)
in kotzebue we didn't get out the plane this time, i asked for the certificate for people that fly over the artic circle, but they don't have it anymore...
when we got in Anchorage we recieved cookies and my brother pick me up at the airport...
it was a great, great week, i think i learned a lot about the rural community, and i really have fun in everything i did...i'll seriously miss shish...
After a long day on Saturday, the Ambassadors rested and had some hang out time with their host families. We then all got together for the matinee of Clash of the Titans on the "big" screen. After the movie we met at Jitters for Italian sodas and planned the week. What a great group!
What is it less then two days now :) David and Heather(thank you for hosting me Heather) i cant wait to meet you both and to see every one. I am really exsited i cant wait to see what you have planed. the weather here is being weird but that dose not matter right now it how the weather is up there my mom looked and said something about it being 30 or something but i just hope the wind will not keep us out well i need to go pack.
We are having such a great time with you Shungnak!! I am already sad to see Friday advancing so quickly! I am so glad that we will get to see you again when we visit in a few weeks! What an awesome experience thus far! I can't wait for H2Oasis and BBQ, we sure are eating good!!
oh yeah....cool..the weather changed over here.....it just changed in a day..first there was a blizzard..then its raining and snowing....well wet snow...and its been windy....it was really windy on friday night...think the wind speen reached 80 knots....
We are anxious for our visit as well. WE are in the midst of a snowfall, so maybe we will get to see a little warmer weather. We are having technical problems with our upload server out here, am hoping to have videos posted this week. Looking forward to meetnig you all in two weeks.
Tim and Students! This is Jason Moen, principal of Russian Mission School. We are very excited about your arrival to our community this weekend. The weather has been great with lots of sunshine and mild temperatures. Bring your winter gear as we hope to ice fish-manaq-- and do some exploring in the wilderness around Russian Mission.
The students and I are excited for your arrival! we just posted some new videos of our city! Can't wait to meet you all and share our community with you! Today we had the Staff vs. Students basketball game. staff won!! (sorry students). we hope to do a pep-assembly during the week that you guys are here so we can demonstrate school spirit!
ok so now just for some fun and random things that have been going on. going off of what brittany said we got our snow back but i think it will slowly start to melt away. so that was random now for the funny so down here the creeks never really frezzs we were out at our cabin on fich creek and there were two snowmachins and four people and fell thourgh the ice no one got hurt and the drive team was able to get both sleds out of the creek in 7 mins so that was kind of cool... so ya sorry for the randomness of that :D
Glad to see you so excited about your trip here. We are excited as well and will be working this week to get our community videos done, so stay posted. Looking forward to an exciting week with you in Anchorage and then when you come here.
Yes, but we have a road that leads out of town as well. It goes to Utika, the old mining town. Everyone says hi.
We were talking the other day and wondering what sort of rules you all make about what you can and will eat at home. Our teacher heard a program on the radio about rules people make about what they will eat and what they won't eat. One of our teacher's rules at her house is that they try not to eat anything that was prepared before they bought it, like soup from a can. They do eat canned stuff sometimes, but they like, at her house to make their food from scratch. What are some of your rules in your houses?
This week would be different if I were on a vacation here in Anchorage, because I wouldn't be exploring Begich Middle School. What I liked during the visit was, meeting people that weren't participating The RURE. I learned that they are more education here at Begich then in Saint Paul.

We are having a great time at Colony Middle School with our student host ambassadors. Thus far, we have had some great ice-breakers at Mr. Cox's house, Ms. Kenney has been a wonderful host also. We went to Elmendorf airforce base to tube/sled down the hills. We went to see Avatar 3-D, we've been to McDonalds twice already, and we toured the Matanuska Creamery to learn how cheese is made. Also, we went to Alyeska and rode on the Tram to the top of the mountain!! Today we will be touring a Court House, the Recycling Center, Fredmeyer's and the Wasilla River! We have some great film footage, and when we can get a chance we will down-load some of it for everyone to see!
On Saturday when we all got off the plane we were all tired. After we landed i went straight to a basketball game. I was really nervous to go to Bartlett because its a bigger school.
On the first day of school i was also nervous, but after 5 minutes i got used of the school. The classmates had lots of questions; they didnt know where Saint Paul was. The first day was awesome and exciting, just cant wait until tomorrow.
Tricia and I are both having so much fun exchanging with you all. When I lay my head down on my pillow I am seeing what we did together that day. All the new experiences for you like learning how to cross country ski, making cheese curds, milking a fake cow (haha), tram riding, 3-D, tubing...we have shared so much in 3 days. Thanks for all the positive energy you bring with you. More good days ahead.
-Mr. Cox
Hi Reanna. Peyton here. Just wanted to say I can't wait to meet you and everyone else on Friday. Everything has been going so fast my head is spinning, but life goes on. Ah! I can't believe that tommorow is when we go to the Airport. Forewarning, I've never been on a plane before so I might bombard you with questions. Hope to see you soon.
Hi Deering!!
I am happy to announce that we have finally a picked our ambassadors. They are the awesome alejandra, the mysterious Michael, the vivacious Virginia, the classy kyra, and the magical Melissa. They are all so excited to meet you guys. I am teaching them how to use the website today so look for updates on their blogs really soon.
Take care,
Liz "teacher extrodinaire"
Hi Shungnak students and teacher!!! We are excited to be working with you on the exchange!! We are just under way with posting and getting the students profiles up! we are excited to experience all the new adventures and different aspects of culture! Talk to you again soon!
Here iam today being bored and Excited at the same time we will be in Anchorage in about 3 MORE DAYS. I really can not wait to see you guys again. We have questions for you, hope you have questions for us. So we will see you Ambassadors in about 3 Days!!!
So all our snow is melting, it's gets pretty cold out at night after being so warm for awhile... Fell going down our driveway this morning from the pipes bursting next door...not funny at all. Some days i can't wait for the snow to be gone then other days i want the snow to stay....well gtg to class talk to you later...
Hi Shandel! I'm really looking forward to meeting you and everyone else. I hope my deep thoughts start showing up. I might placed them a bit too "deep" and they have not surfaced yet! What kinds of things do you like to do? See you guys Friday!! Emma
Hey, Tyler this is ozzy and i read your profile and you seem like an interesting person and I'm looking forward to seeing you and your parents. What are some things that you would want to do when I get there and what kind of foods you would you like to eat?
I have been able to down-load about half of our community profile films, but we are having technical difficulties with the rest of them. I think we may have to down-load the rest from another location (perhaps when we are in Palmer) that has a more dependable dial-up or wireless connection.
We are anxiously awaiting this new adventure. We are looking forward to learning about life in Anchorage as well as having some of your students learn about life in our small village. We have been updating our posts daily so keep checking back in to learn new information.
we have basketball trips i think everyweek. so last week we went to chevak and it was awesome. this week were going to toksook and try to beat all teams so we can be on the first seed during district, next week we'll go to bethel and try to get used to the rim so that during district we can do much better... in 2 weeks lol it's the island league, hope we get first. so yeah it's been a long time writing this message and i'm reall excited, if we go to state i might not be able to go rose urban, cuz we might be able to go state if we get our butts in the game.. lol
I wanted to mention this to both groups of ambassadors. The town of Palmer actually qualifies as "rural" based on the (city limits) population size, however, because we live in the greater region known as the Matanuska-Susitna Valley, we are actually considered "urban." Our valley has many residents, we are just really spread out over a vast road system. We are so excited to show you guys around!
-Mr. Cox
I've only worked with the pictures but I'm pretty sure the media is the same deal.
On your profile, or wherever you want to put your photo, click on the link change under the media slot. A box should pop up that tells you to drag or paste your media onto it. I found that I had to manually open up my picture folder and drag the picture into the box.
Hope that help with your computer problems!
The community of Eagle River/Chugiak sits just north of Anchorage and is part of the Municipality of Anchorage. A short 10 mile drive from downtown.
The 2000 census found a population of 22,236 in Eagle River and an additional 8,000 in the settlements northeast of Eagle River: Chugiak, Birchwood, Peters Creek, Thunderbird Falls and Eklutna.[1] About 30,000 people live in the Eagle River and Chugiak areas, on both sides of the Glenn Highway. Many personnel from Fort Richardson and Elmendorf Air Force Base live in Eagle River, and many of the area's civilian residents commute to Anchorage jobs
So its a bummer things haven't gone as planned, but were all still really excited... next week Thursday and Friday we have no school..inservice i think but can't be sure...well gotta go for now lunch period is almost over...probably be another few weeks before I blog again...just kidding I got my internet fixed at home so I can talk more often
we are so excited for this upcoming adventure. We are looking forward to seeing what life/school are like in the city, as well as sharing with you life/school in rural Alaska. The opportunities that this week will offer to kids in Shungnak is once in a lifetime. We will continually work on posting profiles, updates and pictures so keep coming back and catching up on all the interesting information on life, families, the community and school in Shungnak, Alaska... where everyday we take pride in being the home of the Shungnak Eagles!
It was quite the logistic race to get the Begich students to St. Paul, but we are grateful to everyone who worked hard to make it all possible. I personally am grateful that out of over 15 students who started in this adventure during one lunchtime meeting with Mr. Turner, that I have six students who were willing to see it through the majority of the Destinations and be cultural ambassadors for our new friends.
Prior to meeting the Begich students, it never occurred to me that they would not have know each other from their classes and general school interactions. However, I now remember how few people outside my core group that I actually knew in my own jr high school which had hundreds of students attending.
I am thankful that we could help get these kids together and am hopeful that they will maintain this relationship.
We are excitedly awaiting our cultural exchange. There are many wonderful and exciting things we want to share with you about our small rural community. While life in rural Alaska has its own unique challenges, we also have many positive aspects within our small community that make rural life fun and adventuresome. We are looking forward to your time here, a chance to share and grow with you!
ya we heard a bit about that idea but ya we are all just like why. So anyway you gays are set to come down the 19 till the 26 of march but it is still quite a ways away so what are you all up to how is school and what not going. And we are all just as bumbed out as you all i cant wait for you all to acutally get down here
We're so excited to be visiting you in just 3 days! My students are eager to see what plans have been made for their visit. We've had the privilege of meeting some people from St. Paul recently and can't wait to meet everyone else. See you soon!
Sra. Abshier
matthew have to be in inservice days because of his "BOSS", nah mean? cuz maybe he's a lil too short for it and i don't know.. lol i kid... i really don't know, i was telling him that he can do it over there with polycom and stuff, but i don't know what happened..
It will be nice meeting you guys! We hear that you have something called a "wheel". How many stories high are your igloos?
