SISTER SCHOOL EXCHANGE

Download Applications for Sister School Exchange

The Sister School Exchange is intended to create a sustainable sister school relationship between urban and rural classrooms/schools through contact and simple projects and is designed for either high school or junior/middle school students.

The Sister School Exchange provides the academic and community activities that enable students to explore those personal, social and cultural connections that urban and rural Alaskans share, as well as those that make them unique.

The curriculum has six components. Each lesson is intended to be completed within a week’s time and then shared with the sister school counterpart. After completing the curriculum, the program sends the teacher with five students of his/her choice to visit their sister school. The teacher and students are hosted in individual homes with each host family completing criminal background and child protection screenings.

The travelers spend one week in each others communities and schools. During their stay educational projects and field trips are sponsored by the Exchange to broaden the students knowledge of what is beyond their communities. The students spend the first part of the day in the sister school classroom, then spend the remainder of the day participating in the arranged field trips. In the evening the teacher and students go to their individual host families to participate in family activities.

All travel costs are covered by the Exchange. In addition, teachers receive an addendum for their work, and the cost of their substitutes is underwritten by the Exchange.  The Alaska Humanities Forum and the selected school sign a “Memorandum of Understanding” outlying the exchange program’s responsibilities and obligations and the school’s commitment to working and supporting the selected teacher during the exchange program.
