"We were given the opportunity to sit with an elder as he showed us how to clean and carve baleen. This experience has also shown me how important subsistence hunting, fishing, and whaling are to this community."
- Byran A. Barnes, Junior Dimond High School

"I think that this program is perfect for kids that live in the urban and rural areas. It teaches both types of kids the importance of the others life style." - Brittany Cogdill, Senior Chugiak High School

“The exchange program was an awesome experience. Not only did it help me make new friends, but it also helped me get closer to some people I already knew. The best part of the exchange was meeting my host family and the Anchorage students. I will never forget the time when I first learned how to play monopoly with my host family. That was such a fun night. Another time I will never forget is when we went skiing and when I went down the hill. It was scary, but if I ever get the chance to do it again, I would. I will never forget the Anchorage students. It was fun hanging out with them and I sure hope to see them again someday. If I ever get the chance to go on a student exchange again, I’d do it. Living in a new place with a different family and learning how similar and different people live is a lifetime opportunity. I don’t know if I’ll ever get the chance to do it again, but I sure would love it.” ~Karlo, Barrow

"I got a better understanding of city life. This also prepared me to go to college by attending a huge high school with a lot of students. They made me feel like I was part of the family. I thought the people of Anchorage were very nice!"
